Wool is a protein fiber. It carries natural lanolin, takes dye differently across natural and synthetic batches, and can hold close to a third of its weight in moisture before the surface feels damp. On the Peninsula, where the marine layer pushes humidity through Atherton most mornings and the winter rains keep the air saturated for weeks, that reservoir matters. A rug that reads dry underfoot can stay wet at the foundation — and a foundation that stays wet browns, then eventually mildews.

The construction compounds it. Most fine rugs are knotted on cotton or silk warps and wefts, cellulosic materials that wick moisture upward and release tannins as they dry.
