A staircase is the most concentrated wear run of carpet in an Atherton home. Every footfall lands on the nosing — the leading edge where the pile bends over the lip of each tread — so the fibre there crushes and abrades first while the riser above it stays almost untouched. A grey traffic lane forms down the centre of the flight long before the rest of the carpet looks tired, and on the fine wool and wool-silk runners common in these houses the crush shows early. Alongside it comes filtration soiling: the dark, hard-to-shift lines that build along the spindles, the stringer, and where the carpet meets the skirting, drawn there as household air passes through the pile and drops its fine airborne load at the edges. Over-wet a stair and the moisture wicks back up the pile as it dries, carrying soil to the surface as browning, while a saturated jute or hessian backing can shrink or brown and the pad can hold damp long enough to turn musty.

These are natural, alkaline-sensitive fibres with real dye-bleed risk, so the generic hot flood used on synthetic wall-to-wall is exactly the wrong tool here.

1. Dry grit is lifted first — the pile base and each nosing are worked and vacuumed before any moisture touches the carpet, because ground-in mineral grit is what actually abrades wool on a stair, and removing it dry protects the fibre.
2. Filtration lines and the centre traffic lane are treated as separate problems: pH-appropriate, wool-safe chemistry hand-applied along the spindles, stringer and skirting with proper dwell time, rather than a single blanket pass that leaves the edges dark.
3. Extraction is run at low, metered moisture and worked tread by tread so solution never sheets down the risers into the pad and the timber — controlled passes, then the pile and nosings groomed back to lie true.
4. Each tread is dried with directed airflow and the pile checked with a moisture meter against the day’s Peninsula humidity before sign-off, so nothing is left damp enough to wick, brown, or turn the pad musty.

• Late October into November, before the wet season sets in — clean while dry-downs are still quick, ahead of the fog and rain that make every stair slow to dry.
• Early spring, once the wet months close — after a winter of tracked-in mud, redwood and oak litter, and pollen has loaded the traffic lane and the nosings.
• When filtration lines appear along the spindles or skirting — the dark edges only deepen, and they are far harder to lift once they have set.
• When the centre of the flight greys into a distinct lane against clean risers — the sign grit is abrading the pile and the wool needs attention before wear becomes permanent.
• Ahead of holiday hosting, allowing enough lead time for a full, unhurried dry in damp winter air.
