A Los Altos Hills view wall is not a suburban picture window. These are graded hillside lots under a dense canopy of coast live oak, and the glass runs floor-to-ceiling to hold the valley and Bay views that justify the address. That combination — large-format architectural glazing set into a wooded, west-facing slope — collects a very particular load. In spring the oaks drop pollen and a fine tannin-stained catkin litter that streaks the moment it meets moisture; through the dry months the same trees shed honeydew and sap-borne grime that fogs exterior faces no household squeegee touches.

Then there is the water itself. Much of the hills runs on wells and pressurized irrigation, and that mineral-heavy water is what feeds the sprinklers arcing across terraced beds and the misters on the terrace. 3. Skylights, clerestory bands, and second-storey view walls on the graded slope are reached on stabilized ladder and pole systems set for the grade, with runoff directed away from terraced beds and downslope neighbours rather than sheeting across the driveway.
4. Interior faces, tracks, and screens are detailed last — sills vacuumed of oak debris, sliders and screens cleared of the fog-lifted haze, so the wall of glass reads clean from inside the great room as well as from the terrace.

• Late spring, once the oak pollen and catkin drop finishes — usually by late May — so the season’s heaviest tannin streaking is cleared in one pass rather than re-coating fresh glass.
