Glass sheds. A window screen does the opposite: it is a fine mesh weave whose job is to catch, and under Atherton’s canopy of coastal redwood and valley oak it catches a great deal. Spring oak pollen packs the openings until the mesh reads as a solid sheet; needle litter and fine bark shed collect at the bottom rail; spider silk bridges the corners. None of it sheets off in the next rain the way it would from a pane — it stays woven into the mesh until someone flushes it out from both faces.

The second complication is that no large estate here runs one kind of screen. Older elevations carry bright aluminum mesh in aluminum frames; newer additions use charcoal fiberglass for a darker sightline; west and southwest exposures often wear denser solar shade screens sized to cut afternoon load. Each has its own tension tolerance and its own failure mode — aluminum dents and creases, fiberglass grows brittle under UV and tears if it is scrubbed like metal, solar mesh clogs faster because its weave is tighter.

Then there is the marine layer. Openings shaded by the tree line and fed by summer fog and wet Peninsula winters stay damp for long stretches, and damp mesh grows moss, algae, and mildew — first in the spline channel and the frame corners, then across the weave. The same moisture pits aluminum frames and blooms white oxide along the extrusions. By the time the growth is visible the rubber spline has usually dried and shrunk, so the mesh sags — which is why cleaning and repair belong to the same visit here rather than two.

1. Inventory and sort every screen by mesh type and condition before anything is touched — bright aluminum, charcoal fiberglass, and dense solar shade panels each flagged separately, along with any weave that is already brittle, bowed, or torn, so cleaning pressure and chemistry are matched to the panel rather than to the whole set.
2. Remove the screens to work the glass behind them, then flush the mesh from both faces at low pressure with a soft brush, treating established moss, algae, and mildew with a solution the frame material tolerates and clearing the spline channel and corner joints where growth and needle debris collect.
3. Repair as part of the same visit — re-spline slack or bellied mesh, replace UV-brittled or torn panels in matching weave and color, square and reseat frames that have racked, and address aluminum pitting and oxide bloom before it eats further into the extrusion.
4. Dry each screen fully before refitting so no marine damp is sealed back against frame and sash, then verify every panel seats square in its opening and latches clean.

• Late spring, once the oak pollen bloom closes — roughly May into June, when the season’s heaviest pollen load has packed the mesh and dulled the view.
• Early fall, after redwood and oak drop — needle litter, bark shed, and leaf debris that has collected at the bottom rails through the dry season.
• The tail of the wet season, February into March — when winter damp has let moss, algae, and mildew establish on shaded, tree-lined north and east openings.
• Before the summer marine-layer months — when windows are opened for morning fog and evening cooling and airflow through a clean, well-seated screen actually matters.
• Whenever a panel sags, bows, or a corner has pulled free — a dried, shrunken spline should be reset before the mesh tears and the whole panel needs replacing.
