Golden Beach sits on a narrow strip between the Atlantic and the Intracoastal, and its travertine lives in that exposure. Travertine is a soft calcium-carbonate stone laced with natural voids; the pavers and deck tiles here are typically filled and honed, which reads as a smooth surface but is really a skin of grout-fill over open pores. Salt aerosol off the ocean settles into those pores, then recrystallises as the sun drives out moisture — the pressure that spalls the surface and pops the fill comes from inside the stone, not from foot traffic.

Constant humidity does the rest. Shaded pool surrounds and north-facing walk-ins hold moisture long enough for algae, black mildew, and a grey biofilm to root in the pitting, and that growth returns fast when it is only bleached rather than lifted. Overhead palms shed fronds, seed pods, and berries that bleed tannin stains into the porous fill, while chlorinated splash-out from the pool bleaches one band of stone and leaves the rest untouched.

The bigger trap is chemistry and pressure. 4. Coquina caps, pool copings, and adjoining paver drives are cleaned as separate materials at their own pressure and chemistry, and the whole run is checked for a compromised or worn sealer that should be re-set once the stone is fully dry.
