A wool rug is a moisture engine. The fiber is hygroscopic by nature and will pull ambient humidity out of the air and hold it, which is exactly the wrong instinct on a strip of land where the marine layer rarely drops below the sixties in relative humidity. On Jupiter Island that means a rug is never fully dry unless it is deliberately dried, and a wool foundation that stays damp for days invites mildew bloom, latex breakdown in tufted pieces, and the sour, set-in odor that no surface pass will lift.

Salt is the second problem, and it is invisible until it is not. Onshore wind carries a fine saline aerosol that settles into the pile and migrates to the base of each knot. Salt is itself hygroscopic, so a salted rug re-wets itself every humid night, and left long enough the crystals abrade the fiber from the inside as feet flex the pile. Add the mineral load of coquina and shell dust — hard, angular grit that acts like sandpaper at the knot line — and a rug can look merely dusty while it is quietly being cut apart at the foundation.

None of this is solved by the wand-and-extract method used on wall-to-wall carpet. Fine wool wants controlled immersion, pH held on the acid side to protect the dye and the fiber, thorough salt and grit removal before any water touches it, and a forced, monitored dry. That is a bench discipline, not a living-room one, which is why the partner treats these as pieces to be dusted, washed, and dried under control rather than cleaned in place.

1. Dry soil and grit come out first. Before any moisture, the partner dusts the rug from the back to drive out the coquina and shell grit lodged at the knot base — the abrasive load that does the real structural damage on this island — because water turns loose grit into grinding paste.
2. Fiber, dye, and construction are tested. Hand-knotted, hand-tufted, and blended pieces each tolerate different handling, so the partner checks dye stability and foundation type and holds the wash on the acid side of neutral to protect wool and keep colors from bleeding or browning.

• When a rug smells of mildew or feels damp at the back, that is trapped humidity in the foundation and a reason to move quickly, not to spot-treat.
• After a season of open doors and onshore wind, when salt aerosol and palm shed have built up, a full wash clears the saline load before it can abrade the knots.
