A hand-knotted Oriental rug is not a carpet; it is a layered textile — a wool or silk pile locked to a cotton warp and weft, coloured with dyes that were never engineered for the Atlantic. On Jupiter Island the air itself is the problem. Salt aerosol drifts inland off the surf and settles into the pile, and because sea salt is hygroscopic it never fully dries: it pulls ambient moisture back into the foundation days after a rug looks dry, keeping the cotton structure damp enough to invite mildew and, over seasons, dry rot along the selvages and fringe.

That standing humidity is what makes the surface its own category here. Cellulosic browning — the yellow-to-tan bleed that migrates up cotton fringe and into the field — is driven by moisture wicking lignin to the surface, and a closed, softly cooled winter home accelerates it. Natural and early synthetic reds and indigos sit ready to migrate the moment they meet water and warmth, so any in-home wet pass risks setting a bleed permanently into an ivory ground.

Then there is what the island physically deposits: fine coquina and shell-stone grit that acts like sandpaper at the base of the knots, palm shed and pollen that feed mould, and, after a storm, brackish water and organic debris driven deep into the weave. None of this is resolved by surface extraction — it has to be washed out of the whole structure.

1. The rug is dusted before any water touches it — suspended dry, the embedded coquina grit and shell-stone sand are struck out of the foundation, because washing abrasive particulate in only grinds it deeper and greys the pile.
2. Dyes and fibres are tested for the salt-and-humidity bleed risk specific to these rugs; wool, silk, and any fugitive reds or indigos are cleaned at a controlled temperature and a wool-safe pH, then locked with an acid rinse that resets the dye and arrests the cellulosic browning the climate encourages.
3. Cleaning is done by full immersion off-site, never a damp in-home pass — the only way to flush salt, palm-shed organics, and post-storm brackish residue out of the cotton foundation rather than driving them back into it.
4. Drying is fast, flat, and force-aired in a controlled room, since a barrier-island rug left to dry slowly in ambient humidity is the one that develops mildew, browning, and a musty foundation.

• Before you close the house for summer — a rug cleaned and fully dried before a Jupiter Island home is shut up under low cooling won’t sit in trapped humidity and brown at the fringe while you’re away.
• After any water intrusion or storm surge — brackish water and debris in the foundation should be flushed within days, before mildew and dry rot set into the cotton warp.
• At the close of hurricane season, November onward — the dry-season window is the right time to reverse a summer of salt aerosol and standing humidity in the pile.
• When fringe yellows or the underside smells musty — both are early cellulosic browning and foundation mildew, and both are far easier to arrest than to reverse.
• Ahead of the winter season — return rugs clean and dye-stable before the house is fully in use, not after grit has been walked back through the knots.
