Stairs concentrate traffic like no other floor in the home. Every trip between levels funnels onto one narrow run, and the nosing — the front edge of each tread — absorbs the pivot of every footfall, so the pile crushes and abrades there long before the field of the carpet shows wear. 2. Remove dry soil first. The abrasive grit and decomposed granite tracked up from graded driveways is lifted with edge tools and deep vacuuming from the nosing and the tread-to-riser crevice before a drop of moisture is introduced, so it is not driven deeper into the pile.
3. Extract top-down at controlled low moisture, working each tread so solution never runs onto stairs already cleaned, with the nosing agitated by hand where crushing and tannin staining concentrate.
4. Groom the pile in the direction of the nosing, set airflow along the run, and confirm the seam and pad are dry before the stair returns to traffic — because in this fog belt, with high humidity lingering into the day, the stair will not reliably dry on its own and a damp seam is where browning begins.
